At Home

When in the comfort of your own home, there are a variety of simple tools you can use to prepare yourself and your loved ones for an emergency or disruptive event

This section provides you with these tools and information, enabling you to undertake a pro-active approach to prepare yourself and your loved ones for a variety of events.

You should:

Make time to sit down with your family, consult and agree a Household Emergency Plan

A household emergency plan is an action plan which provides information on how to find each other, and how to communicate in an incident. It will also provide vital information from identifying how to turn off gas, electric and water mains to preparing your family pets for emergencies.

Put together a Household Emergency Kit

Packing a small household emergency kit and keeping it in a waterproof bag and storing it somewhere safe and accessible will be invaluable during an emergency. The pack should include items such as:

  • Torch (battery operated or wind up)
  • Radio (battery operated or wind up)
  • First Aid Kit
  • Long-life food and bottled water
  • Important documents (e.g. insurance policy, birth certificates and passports)
  • List of emergency contact numbers
  • Spare keys to your home / car
  • Spare glasses / contact lenses
  • Toiletries and important medication
  • Pencil, paper, penknife and whistle
  • Pet supplies

In the event that you have to leave the house and it is safe to do so you should think about gathering a few extra items for your household emergency kit. These items should include items such as:

  • Mobile phone and charger
  • Cash and credit cards
  • Spare clothes and blankets
  • Childrens games / books
