Before setting off on journey in bad weather, no matter how long or short, there are a few simple steps you can take to prepare and deal with the unexpected.

Check updated traffic, travel and local and national weather forecasts in order to assess whether if it safe to travel.

Make sure you pack an emergency kit in your vehicle and put in a place that is easily accessible. The kit should include items such as:

  • First aid kit
  • Torch (battery operated or wind up)  
  • Jump leads
  • Road atlas
  • Warning triangle
  • Ice scraper and de-icer

If you plan on travelling in severe weather you should also consider adding these items to your kit:

  • Shovel
  • Pair of boots
  • Any medication you need to take regularily
  • Food and thermos with hot drink
  • Sunglasses
